About Akasu
Why did the founders of Akasu Palliative Care Society decide on the name AKASU when they formed in 1986? Historically Akasu Hill has had a connotation with healing, faith, inspiration and illness. This is what inspired the group to choose Akasu as the name for the newly formed palliative care society. In 1986 the idea of palliative care and end of life care was relatively new concept.
Our logo represents the crocus that grow on Akasu hill in the spring signifying hope and joy. Three flowers represent the three communities we serve Vegreville, Two Hills, and Mundare. The green symbolizes the hill.

- Began as Akasu Palliative Care Council
- Aim was to serve family members, friends and caregivers.
- Palliative Care Handbook developed outlining palliative care services.
1996
- Presented 2 day workshop for health professionals and volunteers -”THE NEEDS OF THE DYING”.
1998
- Alberta Societies Incorporation
- Designated a Charitable organization with Revenue Canada
1999
- Grief and Loss Workshop
2000
- First Annual Christmas Candlelight Service of Remembrance. (annual event)
- Palliative reading corner with a collection of books and videos at St. Joseph’s General Hospital and Vegreville Centennial Library
2002
- Bereavement Peer Support Group co-ordinated with FCSS and Regional Palliative
Care Program Co-ordinator (10 week program)
2003
- Bereavement Support Group – 5 week program
• Grief and Loss Workshops (ongoing)
2008
- Palliative Care Volunteer Training – 2 day session
2009
- “Myths about Grief” information articles in local paper
•Articles purchased for Palliative Care room at St. Josephs General Hospital
2010
- Collaboration with Blessing Widows group – a supper and video series.
2012
- Further updates to Palliative Care room at St. Josephs General Hospital.
2013
- Major financial donations from Vegreville Rotary Club and local businesses who
provided services at cost to renovate Palliative care room to include an adjoining family
room including furniture. - October – official opening of Palliative Care Suite at St. Josephs General Hospital
- Akasu Palliative Care Society to provide refreshments and comforts in Palliative Suite. This to include coffee, tea, water, blankets and information outlining community
services.

- Expressive Arts Workshop exploring Grief and Loss
2017
- Donation received from 100 People Who Care.
• Donations of blankets and quilts for families in palliative care suite.
2018
- Movie nights for community to highlight coping with loss.
2019
- Donation for patient care equipment for palliative care at Vegreville Care Center.
• Plaque from Akasu Palliative Care Society presented to Covenant Health acknowledging
monetary and non-monetary donations to maintain Palliative care Suite at SJGH.
2020
- Donation for patient care equipment at Vegreville Care Center for Palliative care
residents.

- Annual Christmas Service of Remembrance was provided as a virtual service due to COVID; accessed through local radio station, Website and You Tube.
